Mission:
Here There Be Dragons
Location: Sickbay
=^=Deanna to Washington. Transport Baldwin to sickbay immediately. Medical emergency. Notify Sam, he is code blue, urgent. =^=
=^= Understood. Energizing. =^= the transporter officer replied over the comm.
Moments later, Baldwin dematerialized in a blue hue. He materialized on a biobed in the surgical bay in sickbay, only moments after Sam had been made aware of the incoming patient. He was still in his uniform, which looked a bit worn, with several tears and even some scorch marks. His phaser was holster on his hip. His face looked to be covered in a light coating of soot, and his exposed skin appeared irritated, especially around his eyes.
"Always when I'm in the middle of a coffee" Sam quipped as she reached for the tricorder - taking note of the multiple alarms the small device issued as soon as it started taking baseline readings.
"Ahh crap - neurotoxins are the worst" She noted the irritation in his skin and eyes as well - something else was afoot.
"Cut off his uniform - cleanse his skin with saline to get whatever it is that's irritating it off - and irrigate his eyes. I'll start running a tox screen and try and work out what neurotoxin we're dealing with" Sam barked out orders - the now cooling coffee instantly forgotten.
Viviana quickly removed the phaser and then carefully peeled away the uniform and began dealing with the ocular issue and the skin irritation. As she did, Baldwin began to spasm violent. "Sam, he's having a seizure" she noted. "He needs synaptizine."
"Do it" It wasn't an order, nor an instruction, yet something in between. The situation was complicated but they needed to react to the life threatening situations as they arose.
Sam meanwhile was running the blood sample through a toxicology screen - identifying exactly what neurotoxin had been injected.
"Status?" She called a minute later, risking a glance up from the computer screen that was just about to deliver the results.
"Stabilizing, but the neurotoxin is still in his system and causing all sorts of havoc. I don't want to risk giving him more synaptizine so soon" Viviana replied. "Only good news I really have is that he isn't gone. Whatever it was that he breathed in was mild with what it did to his skin and eyes compared to what it seems to have done to his lungs. I'm giving him 50 cc's of metrazene to try to stabile his cardiovascular and pulmonary systems."
"Give me a minute - the computers just finished analyzing the compound and formulating a counter agent" Sam replied, leaving the monitor for a moment to run her eyes over the patient again. His palor had improved - slightly - since Viv had applied the metrazene, but his breathing was still labored.
"Analysis complete" The computer intoned, and Sam hurried back, glancing at the complex protein structure and letting out a low whistle. "It's amazing he survived at all" She headed to the replicator and picked up the small canister from there. "This should neutralize the toxin - then we need to start repairing the damage"
"Dermal regenerator will deal with the outer damage beyond what I've already done. We need to deal with the internal damage though. I can repair his lungs if you want to deal with the neural damage" Viviana said confidently.
"I love it when a plan comes together" Sam quipped as she went to retrieve another tray of equipment. Balancing hypos, neural stimulators, and inhibitors, it would allow her to carefully strip the remaining toxins from his brain without any further damage. How he woke up though would be a different story.
Viviana chuckled at Sam's turn of phrase. "Cmdr Smith seems fond of saying that. Lt Peck says he routinely says it at the end of every mission, no matter how crazy thing get, so long as things end positively. For Baldwin's sake, I hope your words are prophetic."
Viviana anesthetized Baldwin and then began her surgical task of repairing the lungs. The repair work was fairly routine, but it would be time consuming, as the work had to be meticulous.
Sam looked carefully at the data the scanner was producing above the patient's head - showing the worst area's of damage and where she would focus her efforts. She applied the neural inhibitor, safely reduced brain function - and began to work.
Viviana was finishing closing and preparing for dermal regeneration when the call came in from Deanna. She took it, with Sam still working on the stressful neural surgery. =^=Cmdr Celes, this is Viviana. Sam is indisposed at the moment. Do you require additional medical assistance? =^=
=^= I have treated Jon's skin and eyes. The dermal regenerator was enough to handle the mild skin irritation, but his eyes appear to have taken more damage than I can deal with this simple medkit. We'd like to get him up to the ship, allow Sam to take a look. =^=
Viviana looked to Sam to get her go ahead.
=^=Send him up. We'll get him treated. =^= Viviana responded. She returned to her work on Baldwin, finishing the laser stitches before applying the dermal regenerator to wrap up her portion of his treatment.
As Viviana finished using the dermal regenerator, the familiar hum of the transporter echoed throughout sickbay. She looked over at the biobeds and saw Jon sitting on a biobed. "Be right with you Commander." She looked to Sam, "I'll get things started with Cmdr Grayson."
Jon looked positively unhappy to be sitting on the biobed, His red eyes adding to the general overview of unhappiness. He raised his hand to acknowledge Viviana's statement.
Viviana walked over with her tricorder and a tray of hyposprays. She placed the tray down and opened her tricorder, scanning Jon. "This isn't too bad. We dealt with this already with Baldwin. Thankfully you weren't expose to the toxin beyond this external exposure. Ten, fifteen minutes and you'll be back to your regular self."
"Best news I've had all day Viviana." Jon replied and tilted his head toward Baldwin, "How's Baldwin coming all?"
"He will recover, albeit it won't be instant." Sam replied without being able to look up. Repairing the neural pathways was taking much longer than she had anticipated due to the level of damage. "Viviana, we're going to have to stage the neural repairs, I can't keep him under this heavy sedation without switching medications."
Viviana nodded. "I understand boss. Maybe if we place him in stasis between sessions, you can do things without moving to more powerful sedation." She continued working on Jon, injecting him with a hypo that had an antitoxin to eliminate further internal matters. "You may feel a bit of discomfort for a few moments" she said as she injected him.
Jon nodded at Viviana's statement. "Do your worst. I'm ready." He assured her.
